SINGAPORE TO FIELD ITS LARGEST WORLD AQUATICS CHAMPIONSHIPS CONTINGENT

SINGAPORE, 2 July 2025 – Team Singapore will field a total of 72 athletes, of which 32 will be debutants, across five disciplines in the upcoming World Aquatics Championships – Singapore 2025 – its largest ever at the sport’s flagship international meet.
The announcement was made today by Singapore Aquatics at a press conference at the WCH Arena, where selected athletes were also unveiled in the official Team Singapore competition apparel. Team Singapore will be represented in swimming, diving, water polo, artistic swimming and open water swimming.
The swimmers include household names Teong Tzen Wei, who was a silver medallist at the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, and Gan Ching Hwee, who came ninth in the 1500m freestyle at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris. In artistic swimming, Debbie Soh will lead the team alongside Yvette Chong and Kiera Lee, who are fresh off a historic bronze medal in the overall duet category at the 2025 World Aquatics Artistic Swimming World Cup Series — Singapore’s first-ever medal
in the circuit.
Divers Max Lee and Ayden Ng, who bagged the Sportsboy Team of the Year (Event) accolade at the 2024 Singapore Sports Awards, are part of the diving contingent. The men’s water polo team will make their world championship debut, with the women’s team competing for the second time.
The full athlete line-up includes 16 swimmers, 10 divers, 9 artistic swimmers, 8 open water swimmers, and the men’s and women’s water polo squads. For a complete list of athletes, refer to the Annex.
Associate Professor Kenneth Goh, President of Singapore Aquatics, said: “This is a proud and momentous moment for aquatic sports in Singapore. For the first time, our athletes will compete in front of a home crowd at the highest level of the sport, and they will do so in the same year we celebrate SG60. This moment has been made possible by years of investment in development pathways, infrastructure, and most importantly, in belief. It is a milestone that reflects how far we
have come as a sporting nation, and our growing confidence in taking our place on the world stage.”
The official Team Singapore apparel for the World Aquatics Championships, developed by Singapore Aquatics’ official apparel sponsor, TYR, was also unveiled at today’s press conference. Worn by selected athletes at the event, the collection combines technical performance features such as breathable, moisture-wicking fabrics and lightweight, weather-resistant layers, with practical input from national athletes. Designed for versatility across training and competition environments, the apparel will be worn by all Team Singapore athletes throughout the Championships.
Ms Tan Li Jin, Chief Executive, Sportz and Fitness Team Pte Ltd, said: “Outfitting Team Singapore for the World Aquatics Championships on home ground is a proud moment for us. At TYR, we’re committed to equipping athletes with world-class performance gear that meets the demands of elite competition. More importantly, we’re proud to support their journey, not just in the pool, but as national icons who inspire the next generation. It’s a privilege to stand alongside them in this historic moment for Singapore sports.”
Team Singapore’s Gan Ching Hwee, said: “There’s nothing quite like competing at home. I’ve had the privilege of representing Singapore at major events like the Olympics, but standing on the blocks in front of a home crowd is something I’ve dreamed about for a long time. It gives you an extra sense of purpose and pride. This is a milestone not just for us as athletes, but for Singapore sport, and I hope our performances will inspire more young Singaporeans to believe in themselves and chase their goals.”
Team Singapore’s Lee Kai Yang, who will be part of the men’s Water Polo team making their debut appearance on the world stage at the World Aquatics Championships, said: “It’s a huge honour to be part of Singapore’s first-ever men’s water polo team at the World Aquatics Championships and doing it on home ground makes it even more special. Many of us have grown up competing at the regional level, and now we finally get the chance to represent Singapore on the world stage. It’s been a long journey for the team and the sport, and to see how far we’ve come is incredibly meaningful. We know we’ll be up against some of the best in the world, but we’re ready to step up, give everything we’ve got, and show what Singapore water polo is capable of.”
The World Aquatics Championships – Singapore 2025, taking place from 11 July to 3 August, is a centrepiece of Singapore’s sporting calendar and coincides with the SG60 celebrations. It also marks a major milestone in the country’s journey towards becoming a premier host for global sporting events. More than 2,500 of the world’s top aquatic athletes from over 180 countries are expected to compete at these Championships. Swimming and artistic swimming events will be held at the new WCH Arena, while diving and water polo will take place at the OCBC Aquatic Centre. Spectators will also be able to catch the
open water and high diving events at Palawan Green, Sentosa.
